On Sunday, December 22, between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) R1D5 successfully installed a permanent Diamond X50 antenna at the Elbert County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. This project brought together the expertise and teamwork of Dick (K8ZTT), Hal (KE0KFB), Bill (KF0CWS), Gabriel (KF0LYR), and Jerry (AG7U).
Why the Exhibit Hall?
As part of the November snowstorm after-action review, it was determined that the Exhibit Hall, with its kitchen facilities, would be a more suitable location for a shelter than the Ag Building. Thanks to the strong partnership between ARES R1D5 and the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management, approval was granted to install a permanent antenna at the Exhibit Hall, saving time and effort during future emergency activations.
Highlights of the Installation
The installation process was an adventure in teamwork and ingenuity:
- Gabriel’s Bucket Truck Expertise: Gabriel used his bucket truck to reach the top of the building. However, an unexpected challenge arose when the truck wouldn’t remote start, leaving Gabriel temporarily stuck in the air. Dick and Bill quickly resolved the issue by jump-starting the truck, safely bringing Gabriel back to the ground.
- Custom Fabrication and Setup: Gabriel fabricated a sturdy antenna mount solution, while Jerry and Bill ran cable and assisted with the overall setup. Dick showcased his technical skills by installing connectors on the coax cable.
- Hal’s Double Duty: Hal made not one but two trips back and forth to the fairgrounds after initially forgetting the antenna. Despite the extra travel, his efforts ensured the team had everything needed for a successful installation.
- Team Synergy: Each member brought a unique skill set, making the entire process efficient and collaborative.
Results and Future Benefits
The new antenna is a resounding success. The antenna analyzer results indicate excellent performance, and the custom mount is solid and durable. This installation will save countless hours during future operations at the Exhibit Hall, whether for emergency shelter use, events, or other activities.
When not in use for shelter operations, the antenna will support a LoRa iGate, enhancing communications capabilities in the area. While the LoRa iGate portion of the project is still underway, the Exhibit Hall’s location is ideal for this functionality.
Gratitude and Partnership
ARES R1D5 is grateful for the support and collaboration of the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management. Projects like this are a testament to the power of partnership and shared goals in enhancing community preparedness.
