SUMMARY:Shelter Site Surveys
DESCRIPTION:ARES® R1D5 is scheduled to conduct a survey of a publicly accessible facility designated by either the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management (DC OEM) or the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management (EC OEM) as a priority emergency shelter.  This survey will allow preparation and update of an ARES® Key Location Form that details information necessary for deployed teams to respond to a shelter activation in a timely manner with the right communications equipment. \nThe crux of a shelter survey is propagation testing. We’ll be testing our primary amateur analog/DMR repeaters\, Winlink RMS Gateways\, and Simplex communication with either the Douglas County EOC or Elbert County EOC.  The purpose is to determine how much antenna and radio capability deployed teams need to bring to the facility to operate effectively. \nWe can use ARES volunteers who wish to participate with their analog and/or DMR GO-KIT radio\, Winlink computer\, and speaker stand antenna to test voice/Winlink performance from the shelter. This is a great opportunity to test your equipment in the field. \n\nARES members are also welcome to participate in the survey without bringing their own portable GO-KIT equipment.\nSurvey participants need to wear their ARES uniform and Colorado Volunteer Mobilizer (CVM) identification badge.\nAuxComm members deploying to the DC EOC or EC EOC should wear their AuxComm badge for access to the EOC + uniform.\n\nIf you would like to help out\, share some camaraderie\, learn how shelters surveys are accomplished\, and see a premier Douglas County or Elbert County pre-designated shelter\, contact Operations@aresdec.org.

SUMMARY:DMR Hands-On Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Each Spring\, ARES R1D5 members assemble together to help each other update radio firmware and DMR code plugs in preparation for the busy schedule of events we support each year.  We share tips and techniques to improve our understanding and use of DMR.   Finally\, we work together to test our DMR radios\, code plugs and troubleshoot any issues we might find. \nWe will begin the morning at 0900 with a presentation by Jerry\, AG7U on Roaming.  Afterwards\, we will break out into separate rooms based on a limited set of radio manufacturer / models\, and with the help of top notch “Elmers” standing by\, we will upgrade code plugs\, firmware and troubleshoot any issues we are having with our DMR code plug. \nSo mark your calendar and bring your HT / mobile radio to the workshop.  Hopefully you’ll leave with a radio that is ready for the upcoming season of planned activities and possible activations. \nWe will meet in the Youth Room 144 to start and break out to other rooms based on need and attendance. \nIf you are willing to be an Elmer during one of these DMR workshops\, please reach out to Training@aresdec.org.

DESCRIPTION:On February 22\, 2025\, ARESDEC members will participate in a presentation to the American Legion Post 82 in Elizabeth\, Colorado regarding what ARESDEC is\, our  mission\, our services\, the served agencies and communities we serve.  As an all-volunteer public service organization\, we are made up of FCC licensed and trained Amateur Radio operators who provide their own equipment to perform communications services for community events and in times of emergency. \nThe Amateur Radio Emergency Service of Douglas and Elbert Counties (ARESDEC) is one of 28 ARES districts in the state of Colorado. For more than 30 years\, ARESDEC has been serving our community in times of emergency and disaster by providing volunteer communications services to public safety agencies and support organizations (i.e.\, American Red Cross and Salvation Army). We are a service organization comprised of amateur radio operators who donate our time\, equipment\, and expertise. DESCRIPTION:We schedule two “semi-annual” meetings for DC AuxComm members to meet together for AuxComm training. Our first DC AuxComm meeting is scheduled in February at the Douglas County EOC. The second will usually be scheduled in September each year.  Meeting time is 1830 – 2030.  The purpose of this meeting is to become better acquainted with the EOC\, to discuss EOC process and procedures\, and to talk about the various communications equipment used by AuxComm members when deployed to the EOC. DESCRIPTION:Have you thought about volunteering to be the Mission Coordinator for an ARESDEC planned event? Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a Mission Coordinator? In ARES\, we use Mission Coordinators for both planned events and ‘real-world’ activations. What does it take to be a Mission Coordinator? Are the demands on a Mission Coordinator different for planned events versus activation? Come to our Face-to- Face meeting to get these questions and more answered by experienced ARESDEC Mission Coordinators. \nDuring this Face-to-Face meeting\, we will do a deeper dive into the planning and execution of planned events and probably take 75-90 min. Jerry\, AG7U plans to involve our District EC and the 2024 MCs (AD0UZ\, K0WJF\, N4JJR & W6AUN) in a panel type discussion (in addition to the presentation) to include their perspective and experience.
