2024 Highlands Ranch Turkey Day 5K

The annual Highlands Ranch Turkey Day 5K was a great success, and ARES R1D5 was proud to provide communications support for this community-focused event. The race, held on Thanksgiving morning, brought together over 1,500 participants, families, and volunteers for a lively and energizing start to the holiday.

A Stellar Team in Action

Jim Rooney (N4JJR) led the charge as the ARES R1D5 mission coordinator. His leadership ensured a smooth and well-coordinated deployment for our team. Ron Coffee (KD0TRY), serving as net control, added his signature humor and charm to the role. He kept spirits high by tasking checkpoint operators with fun counts of dog costumes, turkey costumes, and tutus spotted on the route.

Brad Tombaugh (W0BDT), our Public Information Officer, took the opportunity to promote ARES R1D5 and showcase the vital contributions amateur radio makes to community events. Meanwhile, Peter Dunn (KC0FJA) doubled as a rover and participant, running and walking the 5K while staying on top of communications needs along the course.

Before the event, 13 members gathered for a hearty breakfast at Village Inn to fuel up for the day. In total, 15 ARES R1D5 members volunteered their time and skills to support this fun and meaningful Thanksgiving tradition.

Why Volunteer on Thanksgiving Morning?

The Turkey Day 5K is the easiest and shortest deployment of the year, making it a fantastic opportunity for both newcomers and seasoned ARES R1D5 members. Here’s why this event is such a hit:

  • Short and Sweet: Be home by 11 AM with plenty of time to relax and enjoy Thanksgiving festivities.
  • Great for All Experience Levels: A perfect training ground for newcomers, with experienced members serving as coaches.
  • Team Breakfast: Start the day with camaraderie over breakfast.
  • Feel-Good Energy: The lively atmosphere of families, kids, and pets is contagious and uplifting!

Supporting a Greater Cause

This event benefits the Douglas County Fallen Officer Fund, an organization near and dear to our hearts. By volunteering at the Turkey Day 5K, we not only support our community but also honor and assist those who have sacrificed for our safety. Members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were present and took note of ARES R1D5’s commitment, which further reinforced the vital connection between ARES and those we support.
